چکیده

Maurice Jacob played a key role in bringing together different groups from the experimental and theoretical nuclear and particle physics communities to initiate an ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collision program at the CERN SPS, in order to search for the quark-gluon plasma. I review the history of this program from its beginnings to the time when the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) started operation. I close by providing a glimpse of the important discoveries made at RHIC and giving an outlook towards heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). During Maurice’s life and not least through his perpetually strong influence, relativistic heavy-ion physics has matured and led to discoveries that radiate into many other fields of physics. Heavy-ion physicists owe a great deal to Maurice Jacob. Invited talk presented at the ”Maurice Jacob Memorial Meeting”, CERN, 11 September 2007 Permanent address. Email: [email protected]. Searching for Quark Matter with Dileptons and Photons: from SPS to RHIC

The heavy-ion programme at the CERN SPS, which started back in ’86, has produced a wealth of very interesting and intriguing results in the quest for the quark-gluon plasma. The highlights of the programme on dilepton and direct photon measurements are reviewed emphasizing the most recent results obtained in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 A GeV. Prospects from RHIC are discussed.

Predictions for the Heavy-ion Programme at the Large Hadron Collider

I review the main predictions for the heavy-ion programme at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, as available in early March 2009. I begin by remembering the standard claims made in view of the experimental data measured at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN and at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at the BNL. These claims will be used for later discussion of the new oppor...

Intermediate-mass Dileptons at the Cern-sps and Rhic

The significance of thermal dilepton radiation at intermediate invariant masses (1 GeV < M < 3 GeV) in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is investigated. At CERN-SpS energies, a consistent explanation of the excess observed by NA50 can be given. At RHIC energies the thermal signal is dominated by early emission indicative for QGP formation. Chemical under-saturation effects and the competi...

The final state in heavy-ion collisions has a higher degree of strangeness saturation than the one produced in collisions between elementary particles like p − p or p − ¯ p. A systematic analysis of this phenomenon is made for C − C, Si − Si and P b − P b collisions at the CERN SPS collider and for Au − Au collisions at RHIC and at AGS energies. Strangeness saturation is shown to increase smoot...

Strangeness and Statistical QCD

We discuss properties of statistical QCD relevant in Fermi phase space model analysis of strange hadron production experimental data. We argue that the analysis results interpreted using established statistical QCD properties are demonstrating formation of the color deconfined state of matter in relativistic heavy ion collisions at highest CERN-SPS energies and at BNL-RHIC, comprising deconfine...
